If you are planning an evening at the SONDERBAR, you can find the bar at Unterer Bürglaß 10, 96450 Coburg – right in the historic center. According to the official city and tourism website, the regular opening hours are Monday to Thursday from 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM, Friday and Saturday from 5:00 PM to 2:00 AM, and Sunday from 5:00 PM to 12:00 AM. These times match entries in common business and opening hours portals; depending on the event, they may vary on certain days, such as when a concert or special show runs longer. Reservations are easy: The SONDERBAR can be reached by phone at 09561 799285; additionally, directories list an online reservation page via CentralPlanner, where you can request seats depending on availability. If you come without a reservation, thanks to the solid capacity, you often have a good chance of getting a seat, especially at the beginning of the evening. Tip for groups: A quick call in the afternoon is enough to combine tables, especially on concert days or karaoke dates. The bar itself is designated as a non-smoking venue, which makes focused listening during readings, acoustic sets, or singer-songwriter evenings pleasant. Since the SONDERBAR is a classic music pub, there is no numbered seating plan – instead, you will find flexible seating, standing tables, and a compact stage area. This contributes to the relaxed character and gives the team room to rearrange the space depending on the format, such as for an indie concert, a jam session, or a pub quiz with team tables.
The central old town location brings further advantages: If you want to grab a bite to eat or take a stroll before the concert, you are just a few steps away from the action. At the same time, you benefit from short distances to public transport and taxis. Important for outsiders: Unterer Bürglaß is an old town street with limited stopping options; the best areas for getting in and out are in side streets or the nearby parking garages. If you arrive by electric car, you will find designated charging points in the surrounding parking garages – more on this in the section on Directions & Parking. For inquiries regarding opening hours, reservations, or lost property, the bar is easily reachable by phone; email contacts are listed on business portals. Note that special regulations may apply on holidays; some portals provide general times that differ from actual operations. Therefore, for special days like Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, or Carnival, it is advisable to check the latest information on the operator's or tourism websites.
Events at SONDERBAR Coburg: Live Music, Karaoke, DJ & More
The program at SONDERBAR thrives on diversity and proximity to the audience. Throughout the year, the music pub regularly hosts concerts from the pop and indie scene, singer-songwriter evenings, DJ nights, and format evenings like pub quizzes or jam nights. Regional media continuously report on special program highlights, such as when well-known names drop by or anniversary series are upcoming. For instance, the bar celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024 with a packed October that ranged from hip-hop to indie. Karaoke frequently appears in the program – a format that is firmly anchored in Coburg's nightlife culture and regularly ensures full evenings at the SONDERBAR. Announcements also show pub quiz dates and thematic DJ nights (sometimes under the label “Schwof”), mixing danceable tracks from several decades. Characteristic is the open access: Often, entry is free or based on donations, allowing even spontaneous visitors to experience art and live music without much planning effort.
How do you best inform yourself about dates? On one hand, municipal event portals list the SONDERBAR as a venue with contact details and a link to the website. On the other hand, the bar utilizes its social media channels, where current weekly plans, changes, or additional shows are communicated at short notice. Additionally, event and scene pages aggregate the dates; there you will find compact overviews of karaoke Saturdays, pub quiz Thursdays, and live concerts – often starting at 9:00 PM. If you are specifically looking for a genre, you will also find it: The range extends from indie pop and alternative to acoustic sets and hip-hop performances with turntable showcases. For local artists, the SONDERBAR is an important stage in the region, where you can experience DIY closeness, short distances, and direct contact with the audience. Conveniently: For readings and smaller formats, seating is arranged more closely; on dance evenings or DJ nights, there are more open spaces. If you want to coordinate a group, it is best to briefly discuss your arrival; the team adjusts to the expected turnout. For acoustic feel-good evenings in summer, the terrace is popular – during live music, however, the stage and technical area usually remain indoors to consider the nighttime peace of the old town.
The karaoke program deserves its own mention. It attracts a broad audience – from beginners to seasoned voices. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive, and unpretentious; with a selection of well-known titles across pop, rock, and German rap, there is something for everyone. Media mentions and event lists show that karaoke at the SONDERBAR can take place several times a month, often on weekends and with varying additional formats during the week. If you are planning an evening around karaoke, you should arrive early: The list fills up quickly, and those who sign up first get to sing sooner. A glass at the bar, nachos, or a baguette – and the waiting time flies by. In short: As a music bar with a program, the SONDERBAR mixes the familiar and the new in such a way that each visit turns out a little differently.
Directions and Parking around SONDERBAR Coburg
The SONDERBAR is located in the Coburg old town; if you are arriving by car, it is most convenient to use the municipal parking garages. Particularly close to the old town are the Zinkenwehr parking garage (address for navigation: Zinkenwehr 13) and the Albertsplatz underground garage (Goethestraße 9). Both are open continuously and within walking distance to the marketplace – and thus to the SONDERBAR. The operator publishes clear rates: During the day, the first hour is priced affordably, and at night there are capped maximum amounts, making a night out financially manageable. Additionally, there is a summer night rate, which caps costs between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM in certain months. If you value e-mobility, you will find eight 22-kW charging points on level 1 of the Zinkenwehr parking garage; these parking spaces are reserved for electric vehicles during the charging process. The official city utility communication and the parking garage operator have confirmed the expansion of the charging infrastructure several times recently.
As a third parking garage near the old town, the Mauer parking garage can be considered. Here, there were construction-related changes to the main entrance in 2025 and a temporary detour; the operators inform on their website when normal access will be possible again and how access is regulated during construction phases. If you are arriving on weekends or before events, it is best to check the current information from the operator. Aside from the parking garages, there are additional options in the city center, such as short-term parking with a “brötchentaste” (short, free parking for running small errands); for a longer evening, the parking garage is the most reliable solution. Walking paths from Zinkenwehr or Albertsplatz to the SONDERBAR are short and lead through the old town alleys; depending on the route, it is advisable to cross the marketplace. For guests arriving by train, the Coburg train station is the starting point; from there, you can reach the old town on foot or by taxi in just a few minutes. If you want to get in or out at the last minute, it is best to use the side streets near Unterer Bürglaß – in the old town, through traffic and stopping areas are sometimes restricted.
A tip for electric car drivers: The city utility information on charging points in the Zinkenwehr parking garage provides details on power, level, and future expansion plans; additional charging points are planned in case of high demand. If you regularly drive into the city center, you can also check the parking value or business card models from the operator. For event evenings with high attendance, an earlier arrival is worthwhile; the evening rates make longer stays manageable. Overall, the combination of centrally located parking garages, EV charging points, and short walking distances makes the journey to the SONDERBAR planable – whether you want to spontaneously go to karaoke or have a concert on your list.
Capacity, Seating, and Atmosphere
The SONDERBAR is deliberately kept compact and thus close to the audience. For events, a visitor capacity of around 80 people is indicated – enough to create a dense, energetic atmosphere even on well-attended evenings, but small enough that you are close to the action from every seat. For quiet evenings, readings, or acoustic sets, about 60 seats are available indoors; additionally, the venue has a terrace with approximately 40 seats, which is furnished seasonally. As a non-smoking venue, the bar offers pleasant air and clear sightlines – a plus, especially at concerts, when voice and instruments take center stage. The team uses flexible furniture to arrange the space according to the format: For singer-songwriters, seating is denser, while for DJ nights or sweaty indie gigs, more space is left for standing and dancing. There is no fixed, numbered seating plan; instead, the SONDERBAR relies on free seating and an organic distribution that often rearranges itself several times throughout the evening.
The location in the old town shapes the atmosphere: Stylistically, the bar combines the character of a classic pub with elements of a music café. Wood, warm colors, and a deliberately unpretentious decor ensure that you quickly feel like a regular – even on your first visit. Acoustically, the space benefits smaller ensembles; amplification and levels are adjusted according to the format, ensuring that clarity is maintained even at the bar. In summer, the start of many evenings shifts outside to the terrace. If you prefer a quieter setting, you can sit down early at a table; if you seek proximity to the stage, you can position yourself in the front area. The bar area is the communicative heart, where orders run quickly and conversations happen – not infrequently with the acts of the evening, who stop by the bar after their set. It is precisely this closeness that makes the SONDERBAR a place where local scenes, traveling bands, and regulars come together in close quarters.
Organizationally, the size also plays to the advantage: With donation-based or free entry formats, the turnout can be well managed; the team ensures that the paths to the exit and the bar remain clear. If you plan to come with a larger group, a brief phone call helps to arrange tables accordingly. And although there is no classic “backstage” in a large style, the SONDERBAR manages to efficiently bring changing line-ups through the evening – a sign of a well-rehearsed crew and clear processes. Pleasantly: Due to the central location, taxi stands and home routes are short, making visits uncomplicated even during the week.
Food, Drinks, and Services
As a bar with bistro cuisine, the SONDERBAR offers an uncomplicated, evening-appropriate menu: Nachos in various variations (baked on request or with vegan bolognese), baked baguettes (e.g., tomato-mozzarella, ham-cheese, salmon), hearty classics like currywurst with homemade sauce and fries, as well as vegan/vegetarian options like chili sin carne or falafel balls with dip. Depending on the season, small specials complement the menu; sweet treats like warm brownies with chocolate sauce are also available. The drink selection ranges from regional beers – including a rotating “beer of the month” – to long drinks and cocktails, as well as non-alcoholic classics. The combination of snack menu and solid bar selection fits well with the program: Quickly ordered, promptly served, fairly priced, and you won’t miss any action on stage. Those waiting between karaoke slots or puzzling at the pub quiz often grab nachos or a baguette; at concerts, beer and long drinks are the usual companions.
Service features mentioned in directories round out the offer: Card payment is possible, there is a terrace, and the bar accepts reservations – by phone and, as far as activated, via an online page. The SONDERBAR is also suitable for smaller celebrations: Birthdays, regulars' tables, or after-work gatherings can be combined with the evening's program. If you are interested in the exact kitchen hours, it is best to inquire directly during the day; during live music, there may be short ordering pauses to keep the focus on the stage. Good to know: Regional media repeatedly highlight the role of the SONDERBAR for local live music – as one of the last true music pubs in the area that gives bands a stage without intimidation. Accordingly, the audience is diverse: Students, creatives, colleagues from nearby shops, visitors who are just arriving in Coburg, and old acquaintances who have been regulars for years.
If you want to combine your visit with a snack before or after the performance, there are numerous options in the old town. At the SONDERBAR itself, the kitchen is geared towards uncomplicated, evening-friendly dishes – ideal for a small hunger in between. For everything else, the bar is well-networked; nearby are restaurants and snack bars that stay open late. However, the main focus of the SONDERBAR remains on the music and the shared experience – whether it's a microphone at karaoke, a dance floor at a DJ set, or applause at the end of an indie set.

We always love going there when my daughter visits from Berlin. The variety of drinks makes the evening great every time. Especially when the little hunger strikes, I definitely recommend trying the burgers. The meat is juicy and tastes like beef, not like cardboard like some other competitors' burgers. The service was always friendly and served us quickly.

Cool pub with karaoke on special days. It gets busy, but it can get pretty warm in the karaoke room quite quickly. And unfortunately, there's not much space either. But if you know that and accept it, it's a great pub.

Super delicious food! Flexible team and very friendly. We sat in the neighboring bar and were still able to order food from the special bar. Would love to come back anytime.
