Nine halls, a total of 1,284 seats, 3D screenings, a central location near the Post parking garage, and the attached dining area Dolphin's Diner make the visit comfortable. Characteristic is the generous outdoor staircase of the building, which shapes the appearance and marks the access to the foyer on level 2. There you will find the box office, info desk, and access to stairs and elevators to the levels with the cinemas. For visitors arriving by car, the Post parking garage is reachable in less than two minutes on foot. This combination of practical accessibility, reliable service hours, and a versatile program explains why Utopolis is considered the first address for cinema fans in Coburg.

Current Program and Tickets at Utopolis Coburg

The current weekly program, films starting from Thursday, as well as trailer previews and monthly overviews are continuously updated on the Utopolis website. Those who want to book comfortably from home can use the online sale via the ticket partner Kinoheld: The online price is the same as the box office rate, and payment can be made via PayPal, Amazon Pay, credit card, Google Pay, direct debit, or instant transfer. A practical feature is the option to cancel online purchased tickets up to one hour before the start of the show via the link in the ticket email. The cancellation applies to the entire order; as a refund option, you can choose between a voucher and a refund, with Kinoheld retaining a service fee of 10 percent for refunds. Additionally, there is the option to reserve by phone: Reservations can be made during box office hours at the reservation number 09561 23 90 51. The Utopolis website uniformly states the box office hours as 15:45 to 20:45; telephone reservations are explicitly possible from 16:30 to 20:45. A visit is also possible without reservation; those who want to see where they sit in advance can click on reservation or seats on the program page for the desired film and view the seating plan of the respective hall. The cinema transparently informs about surcharges: For all 3D films, there is a surcharge of 2.50 euros; for films with overlength, a surcharge of 0.50 euros applies from 120 minutes, and from 140 minutes, 1.00 euro applies. Tuesday is particularly discounted as Super Cinema Tuesday, excluding special series and specials. For 3D screenings, in selected halls, a one-time purchase of a 3D glasses for 1.00 euro is required; the glasses remain the property of the visitors and can be reused. Those looking for operas, previews, or special promotions can find them under the categories preview, specials, or MET in the cinema. This keeps the program clear, manageable, and easily accessible across all channels – online, by phone, and on-site.

Parking and Directions: A Few Steps from the Post Parking Garage to the Cinema

Arriving by car is particularly easy thanks to the nearby Post parking garage. Utopolis explicitly points out on its website that the walking distance from the parking garage to the cinema is less than two minutes. In the evenings and on weekends, the rates at the Post parking garage are affordable; according to the operator Wohnbau Stadt Coburg, the maximum rates at night and on weekends are usually 5 euros. During the week, the daily maximum rates for 24 hours are regularly 15 euros, and during the day, charges are made per started hour. Practical extras on-site include 8 charging points for electric cars on the entrance level and barrier-free access to this level. The address of the parking garage for navigation is Hindenburgstraße 8, 96450 Coburg. Those looking for alternatives can reach the Mauer parking garage on foot in about 10 minutes; additionally, the cinema mentions a free parking lot near the Aquaria indoor pool as an option. For frequent and regular parkers, Wohnbau Coburg offers various models from permanent parking spaces to business cards and a parking value card that allows saving 10 percent on parking fees. For individual planning, it is advisable to check the daily current notices and any special rates that Wohnbau communicates for its buildings. Combined with the central location of Utopolis, clear signage, and the short, safe path between the parking garage and the cinema, the arrival is uncomplicated. Those arriving without a car can orient themselves at the address Hahnweg 2; from there, the large outdoor staircase and the entrances lead directly into the foyer on level 2, where information and the box office are also located. This way, the pathways for cars and pedestrians are well separated while keeping the walking distances short.

Seating Plans, Halls, and Best Seats: Nine Cinemas with 1,284 Seats

The heart of Utopolis is the nine cinema halls with a total of 1,284 seats. The official hall overview lists the following capacities for the individual halls: Cinema 1 with 120 seats plus two designated wheelchair spaces; Cinema 2 with 235 seats plus two wheelchair spaces; Cinema 3 with 100 seats plus one wheelchair space; Cinema 4 with 161 seats plus two wheelchair spaces; Cinema 5 with 222 seats plus two wheelchair spaces; Cinema 6 with 99 seats; Cinema 7 with 116 seats; Cinema 8 with 86 seats plus one wheelchair space; and Cinema 9 with 145 seats. In total, this results in 1,284 regular seats plus the mentioned wheelchair spaces. Several halls have designated loge areas: Cinemas 1 to 7 have loge seats, which are listed as a separate category in the price table. Access to the seating plans is particularly easy for guests: On the program page of a film, you can click on reservation or seats to open the respective hall plan; there, rows, seat numbers, loges, and wheelchair spaces are clearly displayed. Those who value particularly central sightlines can orient themselves in the larger halls to middle rows and a position slightly above the center of the hall; those who prefer more legroom often find this in loge rows or aisle seats. Particularly interesting for events: Cinema 9 has its own stage measuring approximately 9 by 6 meters and 145 seats (including 18 double seats); lighting and sound technology as well as conditions can be inquired directly at the cinema. This means that the hall is suitable not only for film screenings but also for readings, talks, small concerts, or premiere moderation. In practice, the variety of halls means that the appropriate hall size is available for blockbusters as well as arthouse titles, family films, or live broadcasts, and occupancy can be flexibly managed.

Facilities, 3D, and On-Site Service

Utopolis combines classic multiplex structures with clear service information. 3D screenings are possible in several halls; for 3D films, a surcharge of 2.50 euros applies. In cinemas 1 to 6, a one-time fee of 1.00 euro is charged for the 3D glasses, which guests can keep and reuse. For overlength films, graduated surcharges are applied: 0.50 euros from 120 minutes, 1.00 euro from 140 minutes. The weekly price structure serves as a guide for promotions with a discounted Tuesday, although special series or sold-out screenings may be excluded. The box office hours are uniformly stated on the website as 15:45 to 20:45 for all weekdays; telephone reservations are possible in this time frame from 16:30 to 20:45. When paying, the house distinguishes between ticket and concession counters: At the ticket counters, cash and EC card payments are possible; at the snack and beverage counters, cash payment is currently indicated. Those who want to remain completely contactless can use the online purchase via Kinoheld with digital payment methods. In the building organization, the foyer with box office and info desk is located on level 2; from there, stairs lead to the lower and upper levels as well as an elevator. On level 1, the large Utopolis snack bar is centrally located, offering popcorn, nachos, drinks, and other classics; from here, you can reach cinemas 4 to 8 and access to cinema 9. With clear pathways, signposted levels, and the central placement of the counters, orientation in the building is easy. Those with strollers or mobility impairments benefit from accessibility via the various entrances and the elevator access from the foyer. In total, this results in a package of technology, organization, and payment options that makes the visit pleasant for both spontaneous and planned visitors.

History and Special Features: From Union Theater to Utopolis

The location at Hahnweg has been a cinema address in Coburg for over 100 years. As early as 1919, the hall of the neighboring brewery was used as the Union Theater; in the following years, the building underwent numerous renovations, changes in operators, and film festival moments. The Coburg cinema history is closely linked to the Heublein family: As early as 1930, the couple Otto and Auguste Heublein, along with their son Alfred, took over the Kammer-Lichtspiele; later, the family operated other houses such as Burgtheater and Casino. In the 1950s and 1960s, Coburg's cinema landscape became a stronghold of German film; stars like Gerd Fröbe were present at premieres, and the houses established cinema as a social event in the city. In the late 1990s, the operators decided to demolish the old Union Theater building due to its dilapidated condition and to construct a new building at the site. On July 29, 1999, the last curtain fell at the UT after a special screening; on April 11, 2001, the newly built multiplex UTOPOLIS opened. The name bridges the past and present: UT refers to the Union Theater, while Pol(is) recalls the film title Metropolis. Architecturally, the generous outdoor staircase is a defining element that has been retained in the design and continues to shape the appearance today. With the new building, Burgtheater KG consolidated the Coburg cinema landscape in one house and supplemented it with modern projection technology, several halls, and a clear functional zoning from the foyer to the snack bar to the levels with the cinemas. In retrospect, the official chronicle shows how closely local cinema history is intertwined with the operator family: from the first hand-cranked screenings to glamorous premieres to today's multiplex structure. This connection of history, loyalty to the location, and modern infrastructure makes Utopolis a culturally significant place for the region.

Dolphin's Diner: Eating and Drinking Before or After the Movie

The Utopolis includes Dolphin's Diner, which is located directly in the building and offers a large menu. Guests can find burger variations with sides, starters, sandwiches and toasts, steaks with various sides, pizza and pasta, refined salads, and desserts. The drink selection ranges from non-alcoholic beverages, juices, and coffee creations to beers, wines, a selection of whiskey and spirits, and popular cocktails; additionally, a large shake menu with over 30 varieties tempts. In addition to the standard menu, there are changing specials. Those planning a complete evening can combine the booking of cinema tickets with a table reservation at the diner, benefiting from short distances and planned times. For families, the location in the same building allows for a quick switch between dining and the hall; for groups before previews or special events, the diner’s menu is a convenient solution. In conjunction with the snack bar on level 1, a versatile supply on-site results: quick and cinema-typical in the foyer or extensive and cozy in the diner. Since the menu and promotions may vary, it is worth checking the current notices of the diner before the visit. This way, the cinema visit remains not only cinematic but also culinary in good memory.

Card payment not possible, are you serious!!!?? No info on the site, nor about the cost of 3D glasses. The cinema only opens 25 minutes before the first films start. It's just annoying with kids, buying tickets and popcorn!!! In Lichtenfels, it's quiet, the toilets don't stink, and I can pay in cash without a rush!!!

Overall, a very nice cinema with large screening rooms. You can also buy movie tickets online. However, there is no card payment available for snacks or tickets on-site. And that's been the case for a long time. Just not up to date!

Architecturally, unfortunately not very fitting for Coburg, a bit of an acquired taste, likely due to the tight urban space conditions, the huge staircase is certainly a challenge in winter, blockbuster movies, previews, and opera in 9 modern halls with 3D technology as well as drinks and snacks in the bar and diner.

Aside from the usual long line for snacks, everything else was good. Food at Dolphins is absolutely fine for cinema standards.

No Apple Pay at the counter (due to Visa/Mastercard)…. Popcorn and such only cash… then no card payment, -> you would sell so much more…. This cinema misses the modern times and is lagging behind…. That's why 2 stars, no one wants to deal with this in the Netflix era and the cinema is always empty……
