Homeowners insurance with expanded protection

HUK-COBURG expands homeowners insurance: More protection for house, garden, and natural hazards

HUK-COBURG has expanded the scope of its homeowners insurance. According to the insurer, additional permanently installed facilities around the house are now included in the insurance coverage. In addition, a supplementary module offers new benefits for certain animal-related damages as well as for selected additional costs.

Newly insured: Permanent outdoor kitchens, garden fireplaces, and ground-mounted PV systems

According to the company, the insured scope now also includes:

  • Permanently installed grills
  • Garden fireplaces
  • Outdoor kitchens
  • Ground-mounted photovoltaic systems

The expansion thus targets equipment that in many households is no longer considered "mobile accessories" but is permanently connected to the property – and can incur correspondingly high replacement or repair costs in the event of damage.

Previously, the coverage already included, in addition to the residential building, among other things:

  • Garages and carports
  • Fences
  • Pergolas
  • Bicycle boxes and bicycle garages
  • Permanently anchored play equipment
  • Charging stations for electric vehicles permanently connected to the building

Gerhard Meyer, Head of Property Insurance at HUK-COBURG, described the company's homeowners insurance as "particularly affordable with optimized benefits." In addition, they are adding details "that are now part of many households."

Supplementary module: Animal bites on insulation and certain additional costs

Through a supplementary module, HUK-COBURG now also covers, among other things, damage caused by wild mammals to the insulation of roofs and exterior walls; the company cites martens as an example.

For many homeowners, this is a practical point, as damage to insulation materials not only causes material costs but often also requires extensive openings and restorations to roof or façade structures.

Additionally, the supplementary module provides reimbursements for certain additional costs:

  • Costs for age- or disability-appropriate renovations
  • Expenses for preventive measures against natural hazards

The announcement does not focus on a specific price change; the emphasis is on the expansion of benefits.

Natural hazard coverage: Mandatory since 2022

A central component of the product remains natural hazard coverage, which, according to HUK-COBURG, has been a mandatory part of its homeowners insurance since 2022. This coverage protects against natural hazards that go beyond classic standard damages. HUK-COBURG classifies the integration of natural hazard coverage as a mandatory component as a market policy signal – in an environment where protection against natural hazards is becoming increasingly important for private households.

Classification: Expansion in the private customer business

With well over 13 million customers, HUK-COBURG is one of the major insurers in the private customer business. For 2025, the group reports premium income of around 11 billion euros, making it one of the ten largest German insurance groups. The focus has traditionally been on motor insurance: with 14.5 million insured vehicles, HUK-COBURG describes itself as the largest German car insurer. At the end of 2025, the group employed around 12,000 people according to its own figures; it also claims to be a leader in liability and household insurance.

The current changes primarily strengthen the protection of permanently installed facilities on the property and – through a supplementary module – expand coverage for selected types of damage that are often costly in practice. For HUK-COBURG, this is above all a step to further expand its homeowners insurance offering in the broad private customer segment.
